Inspection of beehives
Proper inspection of beehives and recognition of the symptoms of AFB are the prerequisites to any successful AFB elimination programme. However, effective inspection is not a simple process, especially when AFB scale is involved.
Diagnosis can be difficult
It is also not always an easy task to distinguish between the symptoms of AFB and other brood diseases and conditions in the hive.
Identifying the sometimes subtle differences between symptoms of various bee diseases (called “differential diagnosis”) requires both experience and regular refreshers. Fortunately, there are also laboratory tests that can be used to confirm a visual AFB diagnosis.
